Annapolis

Instalately: Airplane Food, Los Angeles, a Baby, Farm Snacks

The last year of my life hasn’t been a particularly nice one, and so I’ve shifted a few priorities in response. Primarily food and travel are achieving their previously high rank in the list of things I give a shit about, which means I’ve got more cool stuff going on. Here are some Instagram shots…

  • From the @eatspicebox naan bar last weekend at @sohoveganmarket. I'm ashamed to say this was the first time I've tried Spice Box, but I loved this and will get it again. Silky aubergine stew + bright, fresh flavours.

  • 🇬🇧 I love this little island but man alive UK sandwiches suck for the most part. When I saw @rudysdvd (lovely, lovely owner, chef, and staff) were doing a vegan reuben on rye bread I jumped to go try it so I popped along with @emisgoodeating yesterday. The rye bread comment is relevant because most places I've tried who have made any attempt at a reuben here use whatever artisan bread is cool at the moment rather than what works best. A reuben must be on rye. End of. Also it's so nice to have a deli option that isn't another burger. I love a good burger, don't get me wrong, but London is flooded with them at the moment. I'm happy for a good sandwich option and hope to see more come up on the menu.

  • 🇹🇭 🇬🇧 ข้าวซอย 💖 Khao soi is an iconic Northern Thai curry noodle soup topped with fried chili, pickled mustard greens, shallots or red onion, and lime. Pictured is the khao soi from @greedykhao, an all vegan Thai business in London that turns out the best Thai food I've had in this city. Most Thai places aren't great with balance and err on the side of sweetness, with an assumption that's what foreigners like. Greedy Khao throws those assumptions out the window to serve something with a little more finesse and care. The owners are kind, lovely, friendly people who are passionate about what they sell. They do loads of markets around town through the week, so go check them out! Oh, and non-vegan versions of khao soi are topped with fried egg noodles but Greedy Khao gets some inspired crunchy texture in with crispy seaweed. Great idea!

  • Some pics from the @v.sichuan popup at @weinobib last night. I don't know an awful lot about Sichuan cuisine, but regardless of my lack of knowledge this all vegan take on it was objectively fabulous. There wasn't a single thing I didn't love, and I'm looking forward to more events by this seriously talented chef. We started with the stomach openers, a selection of three small dishes (boiled peanuts, wood ear salad, lightly pickled cukes with sichuan peppercorns). Next up the crystal mung beans, with chili and prickly ash oil, salted black beans, and spring onion. Then the finger thick noodles, swimming in peanut sauce and chili oil, topped with toasted sesame seeds and chunky sugar. The mapo tofu was some of the best I've had, and reminded me of the time I learned to use chopsticks eating silken tofu in Beijing (my wrists hurt for days). The fish fragrant aubergine was so silky and I loved the black vinegar splashed in at the end of cooking (we were fortunate enough to have seats looking into the prep area). And finally, the lap zao soother. It was described to me as a kind of congee, which I was stoked about because congee is the best and anyone who disagrees has no place talking about food. But it was even better! It was khao mak (in Thai), a sweet fermented, fragrant rice soup, served with rice dumplings. Apologies to the chef for my 4,000 questions in the middle of a busy evening (I'd have asked 17,000 if I could have). I'm struggling to find reasonable words to describe the food because I'm still in the gushy, excited, wow-this-exists-and-the-world-is-better-for-it stage. But go and see for yourself. The popup ends after Saturday, and they're only there Thurs, Fri, and Sat for dinner (and lunch on Sat). #vegansofldn #veganlondon #veganinlondon #londonvegan #londonvegancommunity #vegan #veganfoodshare #veganfood #veganeats #plantbased #vegansofig #veganfoodporn #veganlove #feedfeedvegan #bestofvegan #veganfoodisnotboring #veganchinese #veganchinesefood #londonfoodscene #londonfoodspots #londonpopups

  • I've been wanting to try @eat_of_eden for ages, but I'm not in Brixton nearly as much as I used to be. @emisgoodeating and I shared this Eden Platter full of all sorts of goodies: pumpkin and chickpea curries, lentil stew, fritters and dumplings, callaloo (this has the warming, comfort food flavour of American green bean casserole made from tinned green beans – loved it), ackee (I'm not usually a great fan of bell peppers, but this was an exception), mounds of rice, salad, and wheat meat. With regards to the latter these seitan ribs are the best I've had outside my home kitchen (I am often disappointed by seitan but not this one). #brixtonvillage #brixtonfood #londonfood #londoneats #londonfoodguide #westindianfood #fusionfood #brixtonvegan #vegansofldn #veganlondon #veganinlondon #londonvegan #londonvegancommunity #callaloo #veganackee #seitanribs #vegan
  • Managed to find 20 minutes of weather dry enough over the bank holiday weekend to drag my wok out and fry up some pad thai. Okay, it's missing bean sprouts, but it's sauced well and contains two ingredients often omitted outside of Thailand: preserved radish and Chinese chives. I've also thrown in some vegan crab because why not?

Average kitchen burners run from 3,000-7,000 BTU (maybe 10,000 if you've asked for an additional wok ring). Commercial wok burners boast well over 100,000 and sometimes up to 250,000 BTU, which is why home attempts at stir-frying can't compete with smoky restaurant equivalents. I got fed up with not being able to stir fry properly, which you can't do at such low heat, so bought a 15,000 BTU Japanese burner a few years ago for my flat (Iwatani brand, if anyone is interested – it's the only affordable portable burner I could find with that much power). But now I have a back garden! The outdoor wok burner I bought burns at 65,000 BTU, so it's a happy medium and I'm really enjoying messing about with it.
