Messy Vegan Cook

Western Vegan Bakery in Bangkok

Update: this review is of the original location, back when Veganerie did not have other venues (or savoury options) outside of Mercuryville. I have not been to the other locations because all of my Thai friends dislike the food.

Bangkok has long since practiced a cultural tradition in veganism and it’s not as if vegan sweets have ever been off the table, but with the opening of Veganerie cake is firmly in the centre ring. Decadence is an understatement. Plan your day according to sugar highs and crashes, because after I hit Veganerie I ran in circles for two hours before napping until it was time to go back to eat some more cake.

There is hope to expand the business, and interested parties have already approached Veganerie with requests for franchise operations. That news came as no surprise to me given how delicious the operation was. I mean save one night when a member of staff sat down f-bombing all over the place with some business buddies, but it didn't matter much since I was pretty wrapped up in fantasies of my marriage to strawberry banana french toast and whether or not we would both wear a dress to the wedding. Still, inappropriate move. Not cool.

Breakfast is a good time to visit the bakery for three reasons: they still have everything in stock, it is permissible to eat platters of sugar first thing because I say so, and it leaves room for you to come back for more later after you recover from a sugar induced coma and need a top up.

There was also talk of incorporating savoury breakfast items into the menu that could be easily prepped in their offsite kitchen, put together onsite, and packaged for takeaway. So stay tuned for that.

Hysterically, I was told the bread was problematic and didn't stay together because it's vegan, not because it's gluten free.

The offerings at Veganerie make a decision hard, so plan on going half an hour before you want to eat so you have time to awkwardly make idle chat to everyone while trying to do decision making. Along with cakes (I sampled a variety and all were divine, especially the carrot) and cookies, pies, and tarts, there are also dessert plates of hedonistic self-indulgence. Waffles with house made cashew whipped cream and ice cream, ice cream parfaits the size of your face, french toast piled high.

Mercury Ville, the shopping centre that houses Veganerie, is right in the thick of the Siam-Chitlom shopping bustle. It’s an area you’ll probably find yourself in a lot, unless you’re stuck in the slum that is Khao San, so there is no good reason for any vegan to suffer from cookie deficiency in the capital.

But please, if you're reading this, try some actual Thai sweets too. You're in Thailand, after all!

Incidentally, there is another mostly vegan soy milk stall called Soya Soyum in Mercury Ville, just one floor below Veganerie.
