Messy Vegan Cook

Dazzling Sunday Roast in Brighton

The Sussex Yeoman pub has been on my Sunday roast must try list for years, mainly due to rave reviews from my pal Liz from Cooking the Vegan Books. My partner and I tend to avoid Brighton in the summer months due to the fact that it's Brighton in the summer, but starvation encouraged us to board a train to finally give this lunch a go.

Sunday Roast from the Sussex Yeoman

The menu rotates, so you're not stuck with a repetitive dinner every Sunday of the year (if you want that then try one of the million other options around town). This week the option was toasted vine tomato filled with lentils, roast garlic, caramelised red onion and basil in port gravy.

It was an unusual take on a roast, but all the components were there (and by that I mean roast potatoes). Most importantly, the gravy wasn't insipid and flavourless, nor were any of the 4,926 vegetables overcooked.

The vegetables are cooking in butter, so be sure to specify you want the vegan option.

Aaaaaaand dessert

And of course, what's a trip to Brighton without some vegan ice cream from Boho Gelato? I chose the complementary combination of peanut butter caramel and strawberry basil pepper sorbet. A nature pairing, clearly, like cabbage and chocolate. Approximately 47% of the ice cream ended up on my shirt, so I still got the majority into my mouth. It was delicious.
