    Vegan in Chinatown

TOFU KATSU JŪ from Tokyo Diner

As if this site needs yet another piece beginning with "x has been on my must try list for a long time now."

Yeah, so Tokyo Diner has been on my must try list for a long time now, but I forgot about it and then I remembered and after that I made lunch happen.

There are two marked vegan items on the menu, including the tofu katsu jū I ordered that is pictured above (and hiya yakko, which I didn't order). The katsu is described on the menu as follows:

Are you vegan, or just virtuous? The delicate, innocent taste of tofu, coated with crispy breadcrumbs and topped with thick, sweet, miso-based sauce. Pure, wholesome and nutritious: perfect for detox. Served on top of a traditional Jū-bako box of rice.

Always ignore detox nonsense. Focus instead on what isn't said, which is that this dish is a box of fried and awesome. The sauce is rich and strong, with a tangy-sweet grape must or pomegranate undertone.

    Go to Tokyo Diner if...

    • You want speedy no nonsense service.
    • Beige is your favourite food group.
    • What you want is a simple but well prepared meal with stand out flavour.

Haha I actually love when places will say something is great for detox and then it is a box or bowl of all frieds! It's like, YOU CRAY, BUT GIMME.

Someone once tried to tell me I was detoxing all the time since I was vegan. I said they were right that I was detoxing all of the time because I have a body.

    Think Like a Vegan Book

A thoughtful read for long time vegans and nonvegans alike, this is one of the best styles of arguing for and discussion veganism I have yet to find. Highly recommended reading.
